FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2 JUNE 2026

The Alliance for Future Generations (AFG) Fiji expresses its deep concern regarding and strongly condemns the decision to open the Israeli Embassy in Suva on 2 June 2026.

As an organisation committed to advancing human rights, climate justice, peace, and the well-being of future generations, we believe that Fiji’s foreign policy decisions should be guided by principles of international law, accountability, and respect for human dignity. We are concerned that the establishment of formal diplomatic representation at this time risks undermining these principles, particularly in light of ongoing allegations of serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law in the occupied State of Palestine.

AFG’s concerns are grounded in the findings and proceedings in the ongoing case brought by South Africa against Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the ICJ’s Advisory Opinion on the legal consequences arising from Israel’s policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and investigations by the International Criminal Court (ICC), We also note reports and resolutions from the UN Human Rights Council, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and statements by the United Nations Special Rapportuers regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

While the Fiji Government has stated that the embassy will strengthen cooperation in areas such as security, agriculture, climate resilience, and cybersecurity, we believe that such engagement must be carefully assessed against broader human rights and environmental considerations. Fiji has long positioned itself as a champion of climate justice, human rights, and multilateral cooperation on the international stage. As such, our diplomatic relationships should reflect and reinforce these commitments.

AFG also condemns the actions and positions taken by the State of Israel that have drawn criticism from the international community, including matters relating to the conduct of military operations, the humanitarian impact of conflict, and opposition to international climate accountability measures. These issues cannot be separated from discussions about diplomatic engagement and international partnership.

AFG, therefore, urgently calls upon the Government of Fiji to:

  • Reassess Fiji’s diplomatic engagement with Israel to ensure consistency with international legal obligations and United Nations regulations.

  • Uphold and protect the rights of all Fijians to peacefully express their views on matters of public interest without intimidation or restriction.

  • Continue advocating for peace, accountability, and the protection of civilians in all conflict situations.

AFG Fiji stands in solidarity with the Palestinian people and with all communities affected by conflict, displacement, and violations of human rights. Just as AFG has consistently stood in solidarity with the peoples of West Papua and Kanaky in their struggles for dignity, self-determination, and justice, we reaffirm our support for the rights, dignity, and self-determination of Palestinians. We reiterate our commitment to a just and lasting peace founded on respect for human rights, international law, accountability, and the dignity of all people.

AFG also joins civil society organisations, human rights activists, and concerned citizens in calling for a meaningful dialogue, accountability, and renewed efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

The decisions made by the government today will shape the future inherited by generations to come. It is therefore essential that Fiji continues to uphold the values of justice, human rights, peace, and international cooperation that have long guided its engagement with the global community.

The Alliance for Future Generations (AFG) - Fiji is a youth‑led, gender‑inclusive civil society organisation committed to human rights, climate justice, and democratic governance
